Movie art. There is no other term for it. Two movies that I have seen over the last 2 days, both larger than life, both harmonious carrying you away into another world.
Guzaarish – Literally translated means, a request. It could also refer to a hope, a desire, a request from life. He is larger than life – Mascerenas, the Magician. Quadriplegic and after a 14 year struggle, wishes to die. That is his request. This man has lived a life of dignity and does not wish to vegetate. He decides to pull the plug when he can still make his decision. It is one of the best movies ever made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
It is not ours to question, it is his to choose. The house and the landscape complement the personality of the magician. Bigger than necessary, larger than required. The beautiful nurse is the icing on the cake. The movie is written like poetry. Subtle and yet hard hitting. Riddles and rhymes, euphemism and glory. (As S said) This movie though is about death, is most life affirming.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a poet and Hrithik and Aishwarya are the verses. Excellent. Unforgettable.
Life Goes On
The movie starts with the death of the central character. She is omnipotent. Present everywhere, at once and in each and every person’s thoughts she has left behind.
Upon her death, several things unfold that she had taken under her wings. The quality of a mother, the protectoress. This movie is like a song. Some melody in the background, light loving lyrics in the form of dialogues and of course the rhythm. She is present in everything.
The movie leaves a deep longing for life. A full life and love.
Both these movies will stay with me forever. The laughter on the face of the man who had conquered his illness through death and the smile of the woman whose touch and whose soul engulfed everything around it.
